city lights - Damascus 2011

city lights is a photography project about the city of Damascus, conducted in March, 2011. Over the course of two weeks, Ina Jungmann observed and documented the streets of the Syrian capital. Her images of shops, streets, and people depict a lively and peaceful city. The photographer succeeds in intensifying the vibrant colors of Damascus and thereby shows the city’s distinct sparkling atmosphere. Three days before Jungmann returned to Germany peaceful demonstrations started in Damascus, eventually evolving into the civil war that still devastates the country today. In contrast to the horrifying images we see nowadays, Jungmann’s photographs remind us of a peaceful culture and the Syrian people’s once normal life.
