Mann Haus & Murphy Ranch
The Thomas Mann House, located in Los Angeles, was the residence of exiled German writer Thomas Mann who lived there from 1942 to 1952. He wrote novels such as Doctor Faustus and The Holy Sinner during this time. Around that time, American sympathizers of anti-Semitic white supremacist Silver Legion of America built Murphy Ranch, which was meant to be a hide-out place for American Third Reich sympathizers. In 1941, the police occupied the compound of Murphy Ranch and detained all members.
Recently, the Thomas Mann House which is located in Pacific Palisades was sold to the German Government and is been renovated and turned into an artist’s residence. Less than two miles away from the house in Rustic Canyon, Murphy Ranch is still owned by the city of Los Angeles. A few of the structures remain as ruins which are mostly covered in graffiti. In early 2016 some of the buildings were demolished, as they were deemed unsafe, however it is still a favorite spot for hikers and visitors today.
