Mann Haus & Murphy Ranch

The “Mann Haus & Murphy Ranch” series explores two historic sites in Los Angeles that reflect contrasting legacies of exile and ideology. The Thomas Mann House, once home to exiled German writer Thomas Mann between 1942 and 1952, served as a place of intellectual resistance and literary creation. Just two miles away lies Murphy Ranch, built in the 1930s by American sympathizers of the Third Reich, later raided and abandoned. Today, the Mann House has been restored and turned into an artist residency by the German government, while Murphy Ranch remains a graffiti-covered ruin in Rustic Canyon. Through multiple exposure and nature photography, this project documents the layered narratives of displacement, decay, and historical memory etched into the landscape.
